World champion athlete and Holocaust survivor Shaul Ladany | DW Documentary

Description

Elite Israeli athlete Shaul Ladany has twice escaped death in Germany. After surviving the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp as a child, he emerged alive from the attack on the Israeli national team at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.

Despite his narrow escapes, Ladany went on to become a successful academic as well as a sporting champion. Born in 1936, the world record he set in the 50-mile walk at the 1968 games in Mexico City still stands to this day. Seventy-five years after the liberation of Bergen-Belsen, Ladany has returned to the places where he almost lost his life. In this documentary, he is accompanied by Hendrik Maaßen, of the German broadcaster NDR's "Sportclub Story" program. The film visits Ladany's home in Israel, sees him set off at night in the Tel Aviv marathon, witnesses his speech to the state parliament of Lower Saxony on Holocaust Memorial Day, and goes back to the Olympic Village in Munich, where he survived the assault known as the "Munich Massacre."
