STRATOS DIONYSIOU has been described as one of the most significant Greek male recording artists of the twentieth century. Born in Serres in 1935 his spectacularly successful career spanned more than four decades and his popularity was still huge right up until his death in 1990 (aged 54). During the 60s - 70s and 80s he recorded hit after hit as he embraced the rebeto - laika songs of some of the most well known composers including Vasilis Tsitsanis Yiannis Papaioannou Mimis Plessas Giorgos Mitsakis Lefteris Papadopoulos and Manolis Chiotis. This excellent Alpha TV documentary MIXANI TOU XRONOU provides an interesting but brief account of his early years as he struggled to overcome poverty and adversity on his road to stardom. A theme so common with so many of the great Greek singers of that era.
