My parents under the ice | VPRO Documentary

Description

In her early childhood, Marcelline lost her mother and father. But the glacier had kept their bodies all this time.

Marcelline Udry-Dumoulin was only a toddler when her parents went missing on a trip through the mountains in 1942. Probably they were attacked by storms, or sank into a snow-covered crevice in the glacier.

During the extreme summer of 2003, a new phenomenon occurred: the glaciers high up in the Swiss mountains began to melt. Never before had the eternal snow melted to such heights, literally bringing a piece of the past to the surface. Including the bodies of missing mountain hikers. The thaw continued after that. 75 years after they went missing, the bodies of Marcelline's parents appeared and she was able to bury them.

The VPRO is touring Europe and European history. The series 'In Europe, History caught in the act' picks up the thread where the previous one ended: in 1999. Optimism at the turn of the century gave way to fear and confusion following the attacks on the Twin Towers, the credit crisis, an increasing flow of refugees, and an increasingly troubled relationship with Russia. But can you recognize history if you are in the middle of it? If nobody knows how it will end?

The series speaks with witnesses, that without realizing it, ended up in the middle of an important historical event. Every week we publish new videos from the new series and previously broadcast seasons.

In Europe, history caught in the act is a series with Geert Mak by Stefanie de Brouwer and Roel van Broekhoven.

On VPRO documentary you will find nonfiction videos with English subtitles, French subtitles and Spanish subtitles, such as documentaries, short interviews and documentary series.
